Hollins Market - Shed Building
Location: Hollins Market Baltimore, MD
Client: Baltimore Public Markets Corporation
Size: 11,500sf
Budget: $1.4 million
Design Support: Reidy Creative
Hollins Market is one of the oldest public markets in the country, and the historic shed building with its iconic Head House has been a fixture in Southwest Baltimore for decades. However, as the surrounding communities began to decline with the infamous ‘Highway to Nowhere” dividing the communities, disinvestment in the area resulted in population decline and a loss of customer base. The Hollins Market/Union Square neighborhood effectively operates as a ‘food desert’, and the market stalls at Hollins Market tirelessly tried to support the nutritional needs of the remaining residents. However, the Market’s continual effort to remake itself has not taken hold. Most of the stalls have remained vacant, and food options are minimal at best with the remaining vendors.
In the Summer of 2022, Baltimore Public Markets Corporation received funding to put long-overdue investment into the 11,500 sf market. Twopoint Studio was selected to design the renovations.
Working with Reidy Creative, the design team working with most of the existing infrastructure and slab work to minimize costs on the renovations. All vacant stalls will receive a face lift as part of Phase I, with existing vendor stalls receiving similar touches in Phase II.
